The attached handout explains the writing strategies<\/a> associated with each rhetorical appeal (ethos, logos and pathos). Read the handout and chapter 6 before you attempt this assignment<\/a>.<\/p>\n using the same article from Step 3 (I\u2019ll send you the link go that article), identify at least 3-4 examples of each of the three rhetorical<\/a> appeals \u2013 ethos, logos, and pathos. For each example that you identify, be sure to specify the \u201ctype\u201d of writing strategy it represents as well. See the examples provided in the handout<\/a>.<\/p>\n Assignment 3: Grant Proposal Most working scientists<\/a>, at some point in their careers, take part in some kind of grant writing to fund their research. If you get your PhD from OU\u2019s department of Biology<\/a>, for example, you\u2019re required to write a grant as part of your exams to prepare to fund your future research<\/a>.<\/p>\n Your job in the popular outreach assignment<\/a> is to research a problem, research possible solutions, and write a short grant proposal to receive funding for a solution of your own. During the school year, I normally make students choose and research their own problem of scientific<\/a> outreach, but we only have two weeks.<\/p>\n So, in this assignment<\/a>, I\u2019ve provided materials for two grants***: Recruiting women to STEM\/Solving problems of access to STEM training and jobs for women. Helping Appalachian<\/a> coal miners retrain for new jobs\/skills in the face of layoffs<\/a> and the gradual failure of coal.<\/p>\n However, you are welcome to look up and apply for a grant more relevant to your field. Just be aware that it might entail a lot more work. You\u2019ll also need to include a link to the grant so I can read it over. In order to make your arguments<\/a> and proposals, you\u2019ll need to do research<\/a>.<\/p>\n I suggest you go beyond the readings I provided on Canvas, especially exploring the websites<\/a> I give links to, but the research materials there should help get you off the ground. Write a Grant To help you write your grant, remember to purchase the grant writing workbook<\/a>: https:\/\/writegood.samcart.com\/products\/introduction-to-grant-writing-workbook<\/p>\n To fill out this workbook<\/a> you will have to research the funding institution<\/a>, research and illustrate that this problem is worth addressing and funding to that institution (using statistics, quotes, and examples), show how this problem negatively affects a specific subject community<\/a> (using statistics, quotes, and examples), and research and propose a concrete solution to be funded. Tips for Summarizing<\/a> Read the article as many times as necessary to gain a full understanding of it. Do not interject your personal<\/a> opinion into any summary.<\/p>\n No first person (\u201cI\u201d statements) are allowed (save these for the response<\/a> portion). Always name the author (full name) and the article or essay title in the introductory<\/a> paragraph, usually in the first or second sentence. What are the things that you still think it needs but aren\u2019t sure how to fix?<\/p>\n Background and Overview For Writing Project<\/a> 1, you examined a ritual, practice, behavior, or habit (what we will generically refer to as a \u201ccultural phenomenon<\/a>\u201d) in your personal life to better understand your cultural identity, relying on the conventions of autoethnography<\/a> to write about it from a first-person perspective.<\/p>\n In many ways, you crafted a narrative (or story) that explained how and why this cultural phenomenon<\/a> defined who you are as an individual. For Writing Project 2, we are going to ask you to look beyond your own identity to the identity of a larger cultural group or community to which you belong.<\/p>\n We are all a part of multiple, different, sometimes even contradictory<\/a> cultural groups or communities: through our families, we might be connected to a specific ethnic or racial<\/a> community; our religion might connect us to another community; the music we listen to might connect us to another group; sports activities might connect us to yet another community<\/a>.<\/p>\n This assignment asks you to choose one of these groups or communities to which you belong and to investigate it. Your essay should be organized in such a way that a reader can follow your thinking and reasoning from paragraph<\/a> to paragraph and within each paragraph. Your primary insight should help to structure the essay for the reader.<\/p>\n 6. You should include 2-3 multimodal<\/a> elements such as photographs<\/a> (of the people, sites, activities, and artifacts that you have researched), hyperlinks to relevant materials<\/a>, clips of audio or video from recorded interviews, and so forth.<\/p>\n You must make sure that your reader understands why you are including these elements and why including them enriches<\/a> your piece of writing.<\/p>\n Consider what media beyond text might reinforce your main idea to readers, convey in another way the significance of your autoethnography<\/a>, and\/or appeal to your readers from a different register.<\/p>\n 7. Your completed essay should have a title and be approximately<\/a> 1700 words in length.<\/p>\n Discussion Post: Answer questions Are fake news and editorial<\/a> slant connected?
