college town. These DUI check points are conducted one Friday a month from 10:00pm until 2:00am.
Local residents are concerned that these mandatory checkpoints might causing more harm than good
and would like to discuss how valid your plan is as a means of reducing DUI in your area. Given this
scenario try to explain how you define the key variables “under the influence” and “checkpoint” to make
sure your study will be both valid and reliable. Furthermore, address the following questions from your
local residents: •Content validity- what drugs will you be checking for with your DUI checks and why?
•Construct validity- how will you define under the influence, and why? •Face validity- what will the
checkpoints look like to drivers passing by and why? •Test-retest reliability-will there be a difference
between road sobriety checkpoints and measured data at the station? •Inter-rater reliability-if two

officers disagree as to whether a driver is under the influence, how will you break the tie? •Error- what
will you do to reduce the likelihood of false positives for your DUI checkpoint?

Question 4779 Lab Classical Conditioning

Psychology – Lab Classical Conditioning or “In Your Face!” This lab suggests an effective and memorable
way to demonstrate several concepts related to classical conditioning, including the following: learning
curve, acquisition, unconditioned stimulus, unconditioned response, conditioned stimulus, conditioned
response, stimulus generalization, stimulus discrimination, extinction, and spontaneous recovery. The
basic procedure is to squirt a student in the face while a long list of words is being read. Only when the
word “can” is heard do you squirt the student. Eventually, hearing the word “can” by itself will cause
various conditioned responses. Step 1. Get a couple of assistants and gather up the following
equipment: A water-filled squirt gun or a spray bottle, a large plastic garbage bag with a hole cut in it (to
protect the subject’s clothes) or a plastic hair salon cape; a towel, pencil and paper, and this lab
package. Step 2. Select the subject and place the garbage bag over him/her so that his/her head sticks
out through the hole. Explain that a list of words will be read loudly and at certain predetermined times,
a squirt of water will strike him in the face. The water is clean and will cause no harm. Step 3. Read the
list of words loudly while the other experimenter watches the subject’s reactions and makes notes.
Whenever you read the uppercase word, “CAN” squirt the subject. On the lowercase “can” or any other
word, do nothing but continue to read. Squirt just after you read “CAN.” Throughout the experiment,
the subject keeps his/her eyes closed both for safety and to avoid the use of any visual stimulus cues
from your facial expressions or hand movements. Read the words at a steady rate of about one per
second. Try to keep your voice even. Read all the words, including “CAN,” in the same fairly loud voice.
Try to persuade the other experimenter and any “observers” from laughing or talking during the
experiment. Step 4. After the experiment concludes, hand the subject a towel and give him/him a
generous “thank you.” Talk with the subject about feelings he/she may have experienced. Take notes.
Step 5. Write up the experiment identifying the following classical conditioning concepts in the context
of this experiment: – acquisition (note that at first, the word “can” itself caused no special response. but
after repeated pairings of “can” and the water, the word “can” by itself became gradually more and
more likely to cause a learned response.) – unconditioned stimulus – unconditioned response –
conditioned stimulus – conditioned response – stimulus generalization (hint: after conditioning occured,
was there any reaction to words that sounded like “can” (e.g., ban, ran, van, fan, tan,

Evaluate the MMP1-2-RF Police Candidate Interpretive Reports for Mr. C (Links to an external site.)Links
to an external site.. and Ms. D. (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. For this discussion,
you will take on the role of an industrial-organizational psychologist recently awarded a contract to
evaluate potential police candidates. The purpose of the evaluations is to determine the psychological
capability of the applicants to be certified as police officers in your state. The applicants you are
examining are applying for certification and will be vested with a position of public trust. If certified as
police officers, the individuals will likely be required at some future time to exercise significant physical
strength and undergo high emotional stress. As the examining psychologist, you are required to comment on the applicants’ social comprehension, judgment, impulse control, potential for violence,
and/or any psychological traits that might render her or him psychologically at risk to be certified. The
state requires that each applicant’s examination include the following elements: Interview and History:
The psychologist must personally interview the applicant and provide a summary of the applicant’s
personal, educational, employment, and criminal history. Required Personality Test: The applicant shall
be administered any current standard form of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2
(MMPI-2) by the licensed psychologist who interviewed the individual, or by a paraprofessional
employed by and under the direct control and supervision of that licensed psychologist.

Other Testing Methods:

If (after conducting the required test) the licensed psychologist is unable to certify the applicant’s psychological capability or risk to exercise appropriate judgment and restraint to be certified as a police officer, the psychologist is directed to personally employ whatever other psychological measuring instrument(s) and/or technique(s) deemed necessary to form her or his professional opinion.
The use of any such instrument(s) and/or technique(s) requires a full and complete written explanation
to the commission. For the purposes of this discussion, assume the interview and history information reported to you by Mr. C. and Ms. D. is unremarkable and that neither candidate communicated anything to you during the interview that raised concerns about her or his capabilities to exercise
appropriate judgment and restraint to be certified as a police officer. Review the MMP1-2-RF Police Candidate Interpretive Reports for Mr. C. (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and Ms. D.
(Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and evaluate the professional interpretation of this testing and assessment data from an ethical perspective. In your initial post, communicate your conclusions about Mr. C. and Ms. D., either recommending certification or communicating reservations.
After you have made your decision, begin the section on each candidate with one of the following statements, identifying each candidate by name. To recommend certification: I have examined [insert
applicant’s name], and it is my professional opinion that this person is psychologically capable of exercising appropriate judgment and restraint to be certified as a police officer. Follow the above statement with a one-paragraph rationale for your conclusion based on the available test results. Follow
the rationale with a brief comparison of any additional assessment instruments you might consider
administering beyond the MMPI-2-RF. Debate the pros and cons of the potential use of other assessments. Explain any ethical implications that may arise from the interpretation of this data. To communicate reservations: I have examined [insert applicant’s name], and it is my professional opinion
that this person is psychologically at risk for exercising appropriate judgment and restraint to be certified as a police officer. Follow the statement with a one-paragraph rationale for your conclusion
based on the available test results. Follow the rationale with a brief comparison of any additional
assessment instruments you recommend administering beyond the MMPI-2-RF. Debate the pros and cons of using other assessments. Explain any ethical implications that may arise from the interpretation
of this data.
